How BMI Is Calculated
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used screening measurement that estimates whether body weight falls within standard healthy ranges relative to height.
BMI Formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
Example BMI Calculation
If a person weighs 80 kg and has a height of 1.75 m:
- 1.75 × 1.75 = 3.06
- 80 ÷ 3.06 = 26.1 BMI
Standard BMI Categories
- Underweight
- Healthy weight
- Overweight
- Obesity ranges
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not directly measure body composition, muscle mass, or overall health status.
Healthcare professionals may use additional measurements and medical assessments alongside BMI.
