Calculator inputs
Enter an amount and VAT rate. Choose whether to add VAT (net to gross) or remove VAT (gross to net).
Enter the amount in the currency you are using. Keep the same currency across money fields.
Enter the VAT percentage that applies. For example, enter 20 for a 20% VAT rate.
Choose whether to add tax to a net amount or remove tax from a gross amount.
Formulas
VAT Amount = Net Price x (VAT Rate / 100)
Gross Price = Net Price + VAT Amount
Removing VAT:
Net Price = Gross Price / (1 + VAT Rate / 100)
VAT Amount = Gross Price - Net Price
Adding VAT is straightforward multiplication. Removing VAT requires dividing by (1 + rate) rather than simply subtracting a percentage, because the VAT was calculated on the net price, not the gross price.
Worked examples
Add 20% VAT to $100: VAT = $20.00, gross = $120.00
Remove 20% VAT from $120: Net = $100.00, VAT = $20.00
Add 10% VAT to $250: VAT = $25.00, gross = $275.00
Remove 15% VAT from $575: Net = $500.00, VAT = $75.00
When to use a VAT calculator
VAT (Value Added Tax) and similar sales taxes are applied in most countries worldwide. Use this calculator when quoting prices to customers, preparing invoices, reconciling receipts, or working out the tax-exclusive cost of a purchase. It works with any percentage-based tax rate, not just VAT.
Common VAT rates include 20% (UK), 19% (Germany), 21% (Netherlands, Spain), 10% (Australia GST), and 15% (New Zealand GST). Always check the current rate for your jurisdiction.
VAT calculator FAQ
Can I use this for sales tax?
Yes. The maths is the same for any percentage-based consumption tax, whether it is called VAT, GST, sales tax, or another name. Just enter the applicable rate.
Why can't I just subtract the percentage to remove VAT?
Because VAT is calculated on the net (pre-tax) price, not the gross price. Subtracting 20% from $120 gives $96, not $100. The correct method divides by 1.20 to reverse the calculation.
What VAT rate should I use?
Use the standard rate for your country or the specific rate that applies to the goods or services in question. Many countries have reduced rates for essentials like food or children's clothing.
